- This is a hard class that requires a lot of work: First off, you are capable of being successful in this class if you put in the work. I am happy to help you the whole semester and beyond but you have to put in the time and effort. For most of you this will be the hardest class you will have taken in college so far (maybe ever). There are lots of homework, quizzes, tests, lab write-ups, etc. I’m not trying to deter you from taking my class but I want to make sure you aren’t surprised when you get here. This is much more difficult than high school chemistry or CHEM 160. I know you are capable and can be successful!
- Nursing majors (and possibly others): This class may not be required for your major. There are other chemistry classes you might be able to take like CHEM 010 that don’t require as much work. Although this class may be helpful if you change majors or pursue further education. Talk to your counselor about this and double and triple check with them.
- Returning students (and possibly others): If it’s been over a year since you took an in-person chemistry class I highly recommend CHEM160 or CHEM010 before you take this class. The average student needs to dedicate ~15 hours a week just to just pass (70% or a C) and that is if you’ve had a chemistry class in the last year. Expect to spend much longer if it’s been years since your last chemistry class. You will at least want to freshen up on your math and chemistry so it’s not so hard when you get here. There are free courses like www.khanacademy.org or http://www.openculture.com/chemistry-free-courses as well.
- If you need assistance with resources, visit https://welcome.solano.edu/student_services/: I want you all to you succeed. But that’s not up to me, it’s up to you. I’m here to help you achieve that and I’ll assist as much as I can. If you cannot access these resources let me know and I can help direct you. There may be food, WiFi cards, Chromebooks to borrow, etc.
- People on the waitlist: I don’t get add codes until the first day of class. I can take 32 students total. If you are above #4 on the waitlist at the time the class starts, you probably won’t have a good chance to get in. If you need this class, I strongly recommend signing up for another class. Remember to enroll in the class if you are on the waitlist and a spot opens up or else you will be taken off the waitlist.
- Class Materials: We will need these the first day of class. See the syllabus below.
- Extra Credit Opportunity: Quiz #0 (LINK) is due 1 week after class starts. You can earn extra credit if you complete the quiz on or before the first day of class on Canvas. If you are on the waitlist I will give you access to Canvas the first day of class.
Looking forward to meeting all of you!
