CHEM 160 Info (Introductory Chemistry)

  1. Chemistry is a hard subject that requires a lot of work: First off, you are capable of being successful in this class if you put in the work. I am happy to help you the whole semester and beyond but you have to put in the time and effort. There are lots of homework, quizzes, tests, lab write-ups, etc. I’m not trying to deter you from taking my class but I want to make sure you aren’t surprised when you get here. I know you are capable and can be successful!
  2. Extra Credit Opportunity: Quiz #0 (LINK) week after class starts. You can earn extra credit if you complete the quiz on or before the first day of class. If you are on the waitlist I will give you access to Canvas the first day of class.
  3. Nursing majors (and possibly others): Although this class may be helpful, this class may not be required for your major. You can go directly into CHEM 010 which isn’t much harder than CHEM 160. If you are a good student I suggest taking CHEM 10. If you think you’ll need extra help and time in chemistry, take CHEM 160 and then CHEM 010 the following semester. Talk to your counselor about this and double and triple check with them.
  4. Returning students (and possibly others): If it’s been a while since you took an algebra class or math class you will want to freshen up on your math so it’s not so hard when you get here. Also practice exponents with your calculator! There are free courses and tutorials like www.khanacademy.org or https://www.cliffsnotes.com/study-guides/basic-math/basic-math-and-pre-algebra.
  5. If you need assistance with resources, visit https://welcome.solano.edu/student_services/: I want you all to you succeed. But that’s not up to me, it’s up to you. I’m here to help you achieve that and I’ll assist as much as I can. If you cannot access these resources let me know and I can help direct you. There may be food, WiFi cards, Chromebooks to borrow, etc.
  6. People on the waitlist: I don’t get add codes until the first day of class. I can take 35 students total for each section. If you are above #7 on the waitlist at the time the class starts, you probably won’t have a good chance to get in. If you need this class, I strongly recommend signing up for another class or my other section. Remember to check your personal and school emails regularly and enroll in the class if you are on the waitlist and a spot opens up or else you will be taken off the waitlist.
  7. Class Materials: We will need these the first day of class. See the syllabus.

Looking forward to meeting all of you!
